Allergy is a common problem that most people have. There
are allergies that are caused by pollens, stinging insects, food, certain
medicines, and other allergens.
One particular allergy that seems to be so prevalent is house
dust mites allergy.
House dust mites allergy can affect anyone in the family
since dust mites are often found in the house, especially in the basement and
attics, or other areas in the house that are warm and don’t have enough
ventilation.
Dust mites, which are also called bed mites, look like
bugs that belong to the arachnids family. They are not seen by the naked eye.
These tiny creatures live and multiply in damp and warm places. They love to be
in areas with temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity of between 75
to 80 percent.
In just one gram of dust, there could be around 19,000
dust mites waiting to harm you.
Dust mites cannot survive in cold and dry places. They
feed on dead skin of humans and pets that may be found in furniture, carpets,
beds, pillows, mattresses and other things in the house such as stuffed toys.
Persons allergic to house dust mites may suffer from red,
itchy and watery eyes; runny, itchy and stuffy nose; and sneezing.
If you have asthma, dust mites may trigger the condition
and may cause these symptoms to appear – shortness of breath, wheezing, chest
tightness and coughing,
But allergy on dust is not only caused by mites because
there are other dust particles that can create allergic reactions such as mold
pores, pet dander and wastes of dead cockroaches.
The best way to avoid getting dust mites allergy is to
clean your house thoroughly and regularly, giving special attention to warm and
damp areas such as basements, attics and laundry area.
Since dust mites are often found in mattresses and
beddings, thorough cleaning of your bedroom is a must. Just make sure you use a
tight mask when cleaning.
Avoid using feathers on pillows. Instead, use polyester
fiber. And if possible, wash your beddings in hot water at least once a week.
Wash also your throw rugs and window curtains in hot
water regularly. Using hot water will kill the dust mites.
For your mattresses and pillows, encase them with covers
that are mite-proof.
Always clean the floors of your house. If possible, avoid
using carpets. But if you can’t, regularly vacuum them, including all other upholstered
furniture in your house like sofas using a vacuum with a high efficiency
particulate air filter.
If you love collecting stuffed toys, then maybe it’s time
to part with them. These toys easily catch dust which may trigger your allergy.
Or if you can’t get rid of them, at least clean them regularly or place them in
closets where dust can hardly penetrate.
Schedule regular servicing of your air-conditioning and
heating units at least every six months and if you have already installed an
air filter, make sure to change the filter every three months.
In any form of allergy, always consult a doctor so you
would know how to handle the condition.
