What is mold allergy?

By Joel Escol

All of us may suffer from different types of allergy. Some will experience mild ones while others have the more severe types.
One type of allergy that a person may have is mold allergy.

Mold is a fungus that feeds on leaves, food, dirt, paper, wood and other substances. It grows quickly in wet and dark spaces such as trash cans, basements, storage buildings and even attics.

We may not know it but we are often exposed to molds while we do our everyday routine as this easily spreads through the air in the form of spores, or we may have eaten food that have molds and nothing happens to us. However, those who have allergies to molds may suffer from allergic reactions if they have taken too much food with molds or have too much exposure to it.
Molds have been used in food production and are proven to be well-tolerated. However, some people may experience allergic reactions to it.
A person who is allergic to molds may experience rashes or hives, itchy or watery eyes, wheezing, rhinitis, and stuffy or runny nose.
Other people may also experience asthma-like symptoms.
Farmer’s lung and Sauna-taker’s lung are diseases that are caused by mold allergy.
Among the foods that have great chances of developing molds include mushrooms, cheese, breads or other food that contain yeast, smoked meat or fish, soy sauce, sausages, canned juices, hotdogs, vinegar and other foods that contain vinegar like pickles and salad dressing, meat or fish that are not fresh, fruits and vegetables.
Molds may also be present in window frames, wallpapers and even in refrigerators if it has not been thoroughly cleaned and dried.
The most common molds, identified through their scientific names, are alternaria alternate, cladosporium herbarum, trichophyton rubrum, pityrosporum orbicculare, aspergillus fumigatus, and penicillium notatum.
Alternaria alternate are molds that can be found in the soil, rotten wood, forest plants, tomatoes, textiles, composts and bird’s nests.
Cladosporium herbarum, on the other hand, are molds that are commonly found in refrigerators, damp areas, straw, window frames, some food, and in houses with poor ventilation. This is the type that primary causes mold allergy.
Trichophyton rubrum and pityrosporum orbicculare are yeasts that are found in the skin of people with eczema.
Meanwhile, aspergillus fumigatus are molds that can be found in rotten vegetables, sweet potatoes, bird droppings, soil and leaves.
Penicillium notatum are molds that may develop in rotten vegetables and leaves, cereals, breads and fruits. In food production, this is the type of molds that is used in making moldy cheese.
To avoid getting mold allergy, clean your house thoroughly and make sure there is adequate ventilation.
Avoid going in areas where molds may grow fast such as basements and wooded areas and thoroughly check your food for any visible signs of molds. If possible, eat the foods immediately while they are still fresh.
There are available chemical solutions that we can use to kill these molds and prevent them from spreading, particularly in refrigerators, windows and bathrooms.
