Food to eat when you have allergy problems

By Joel Escol

Having an allergy is very common among majority of people, according to health experts, as they noted an increasing number of people suffering from different types of allergies all over the world.

Allergy is a disorder of the immune system. Allergic reactions occur when the body is exposed to substances in the environment called as allergens like pollens, dust, fur or hair of pets, and certain food and medicines.

If a person has allergy, it is important that he or she consults a doctor to determine what causes the allergy so that exact and immediate treatment is given. This is extremely important because allergic reactions can be fatal and life-threatening and should be considered as a medical emergency. This condition is called anaphylaxis.

If you have allergies to certain food, it’s definitely important that you avoid eating those kinds of food.

Among the foods that are most likely to cause allergy to some people are peanuts, cow's milk, soy, seafood such as shellfish, eggs (especially the white part) and other dairy products, fish, nuts from trees, wheat and soy.
But there are kinds of fish that believed to lower the risk of developing allergies and to reduce symptoms due to the omega 3 fatty acids content in fish. One example is salmon.

Vegetables are the best food to eat if you have allergies. However, there are some vegetables that may cause allergic reactions to some people hence these must be avoided. These include celery, pumpkin and beans.
Meat is also safe for those who have allergies. Just make sure to take meat in moderation to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol in normal levels.

Since vitamin C keeps our body healthy, including fruits in the diet helps lessen your chances of getting allergy, and even asthma. Among the fruits that are rich in vitamin C are apples, oranges and strawberries. The skin of apples is said to contain quercetin, an antioxidant that has been linked to better lung function.

Quercetin can also be found in the skin of onions and tomatoes.
Another fruit that a person with allergy can eat are red grapes.
The skin of this type of grapes contains resveratrol, an antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory powers that can reduce allergy symptoms.
In a study conducted among children in 2007, it was found that those who eat fruits like grapes, oranges, apples and tomatoes everyday show less nasal allergy symptoms and wheezing.

For those who frequently suffer from severe sneezing or cough due to pollen or dust allergy, a warm drink is proven to ease the symptom. You can take either hot tea or soup.

If you don’t like tea or soup, inhaling the steam of warm water can also help relieve the symptom.
