Majority of people may experience allergy at some point
in their lives. Others who have it, regardless of the type, may manage to
handle the symptoms while others may need to take regular medications, aside
from getting rid of the allergens, to control the condition.
Health experts say allergy is very common. However, this
can cause extreme discomfort and can be life-threatening if the person suffers
from the most severe one, particularly those that may lead to anaphylaxis.
But allergic reactions caused by exposure to allergens
can be prevented. You just need to identify the cause of your allergy and
literally avoid from it.
Allergies can be caused by dust mites, molds, pollen, fur
or hair of pets, food such as peanuts
and shellfish, stings of insects like bees, or medicines.
The most logical thing to do to prevent getting an
allergy is to avoid what causes the allergy, or at least limit your exposure to
it especially if the causes are widespread allergens like pollens and dust
mites.
If you are allergic to dust mites, reduce the dust mites in your house.
Remove the things that would serve as hideouts of dust mites such as carpets,
venetian blinds, stuffed toys or feather pillows. If you can’t remove them, at
least clean them regularly. You may need to include in the general cleaning
your closet since the piles of clothes may also serve as hideouts of dust
mites. Use beddings that are zippered and with dust-mite proof encasings. If
you need to use a vacuum in cleaning, use the one with a double-filter bag to
make sure dust mites are trapped.
If you are
allergic to pollens, you may need to stay indoors if the pollen count in your
area is very high. Keep all windows in your house closed at this time to
prevent the pollens from getting inside. If you really need to go out of your
house, wear a face mask to filter out the pollen. Face masks are always
available at your local drugstores.
While staying
indoors during high pollen count, use home air conditioners that have air
filters to reduce the allergen.
If you are
allergic to mold, avoid going into areas that are likely to be moldy such as
basements, shady areas and even attics. If you can’t avoid staying in these
areas, regular cleaning may at least keep the molds away or wear a close-fitting
face mask.
If you are allergic to fur and hair of pets, avoid going
near them. Or if you can’t stay away from your beloved pets, bathe and brush
them regularly, at least every week. You need to wear a face mask while bathing
or brushing your pet and thoroughly clean the area afterwards. Or you can ask
someone to do this for you.
If you easily get nasal allergies, avoid exposing
yourself to chemicals, fumes and even tobacco smoke as these may trigger the
allergy. If you go to work using public transportation, wear a face mask.
